Time and Date: Friday April 26 2013. 9AM CT – 3PM CT. An optional skills review will be offered Thursday April 25 from 1PM – 4PM CT.
Location: Oahe Downstream Lodge, Pierre SD
Team Make Up: Teams consist of 5 members plus an alternate. All must be high school students, all must be part of the same school, 4H club or other organization. The alternates will not compete with the team but will compete separately. An advisor must travel with each team. If the team is co-ed, there must be both a male and female chaperon. The advisor can serve as one of the chaperons. You may bring up to two teams. Team spirit – name, t-shirts, mascot, saying, colors – encouraged!
Lodging: Lodging will be provided. We are booking the camping cabins at Farm Island and the Oahe Downstream area (if they are ready) plus we will have cots available for bunking at the Lodge. State park entrance passes will be provided to you for the two days of the competition.
Meals: The following meals will be provided. Right now we are planning a cookout and cruise on the Capitol City Queen for Thursday night. Breakfast on Friday morning (bagels and fruit), lunch and snacks.
Competition: Competition will go from 9AM CDT – 3PM CDT on Friday. Teams will visit the various stations demonstrating their knowledge, skills and problem solving abilities on aquatic ecology, wildlife, forestry, soils and sustainable range management. Teams will prepare a presentation on sustainable range management. The problem scenario will be sent out two weeks prior to the Envirothon with a list of approved materials that can be used in the presentation to address the challenge. Travel: Your school can be reimbursed up to $.37/mile.
Substitute: If your school needs to hire a substitute, SD Envirothon can reimburse that expense.
Stipend: Teachers who bring a team to SD Envirothon will receive a stipend of $250.
Teacher Session: Advisers will participate as a team at each site to give them first person experience. This will be a walk through competition. Time will be spent on planning and preparing for SD Envirothon 2014. Teachers who wish to observe are welcome. Mileage will be reimbursed for observing teachers.
